What is a generator?

A generator is an electrical machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and is structurally similar to an electric motor. Generators were developed after english physicist michael faraday discovered the principle of electromagnetic induction in 1831.

 Operating principle:
The operating principle of all generators is the same. Mechanical energy is used to rotate the generator's shaft. Generators operate by using a fuel source to create mechanical energy. It is important to note that a generator does not actually "Create" electrical energy. Instead, it uses the mechanical energy provided to move the electrical charges present in its windings through an external electric circuit. The flow of these charges constitutes the output electrical current provided by the generator.

 Types of generators:

 Dynamos:
Dynamos directly produce direct current (dc) electricity from mechanical energy. They are considered the first electrical generators used for industrial power transmission and are the basis for many other devices later converted to electrical energy, such as electric motors, dynamo converters, and variable current alternators.

 Alternators:
The second type of generator is the alternator, also known as a synchronous generator, which uses mechanical energy to produce alternating current (ac) electricity. Alternators are used to generate power for modern automobile electrical systems. They are also used in diesel-electric locomotives.
