How to Protect Your Garden from Frost Damage?

Waking up on a winter morning to frost can actually be quite beautiful. But it can be very harmful for some plants. The sap in plant stems and leaves can damage plant cells, which harms garden plants or can even kill them.

The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent frost from destroying your garden. Below are useful tips to protect your garden from frost.

Container plants should be brought indoors. If there is no space, place them in a sheltered area in the garden and wrap the pots with bubble wrap. If possible, group the pots together so they can warm each other. Plants near south-facing walls that receive sunlight will gain heat from the sun.

You can place mulch around the roots of delicate shrubs and perennials. Leaf mold or compost can be used for this. Simply rake up fallen leaves. Straw is also good for protecting fruit bushes and strawberry plants from frost.

Plants that cannot be moved can be covered with horticultural fleece. This is a breathable material made from polypropylene and is sold in garden centers or online. Wrap the plants with this covering and secure it with string or stakes so it does not blow away in the wind. Do not cover plants with polystyrene. Plastic can trap water inside, which may freeze and damage the plants. Horticultural fleece is the best option. It keeps plants warm like a frost blanket.

Cold frames are specially designed to keep plants warm. Bring perennials indoors during winter and use extra protection during very cold periods. Check plants regularly to ensure the soil does not dry out too much. Do not overwater them, otherwise the roots may rot.

There are areas in your garden where cold air collects, called frost pockets. Do not plant in these areas and do not place container plants there.

Some vegetables are resistant to cold weather. Brussels sprouts, parsnips, and some brassica plants become stronger in cold conditions. They store starch in warm weather, and when temperatures drop, enzymes convert this starch into sugar, which protects plant cells. These vegetables taste sweeter after frost.

Cauliflower does not like frost, so it must be protected. Cut a piece of garden string and tie the cauliflower leaves together so they cover the vegetable.

In Azerbaijan, frosts can occur until May, which can damage early-planted crops. Also be careful with the blossoms of fruit trees such as peach and apricot, as sudden cold can damage them. They can be wrapped with fleece. Take care of your garden plants.
